2 year birthday paint smash

For this sweet girl’s 1st birthday, we did a cake smash photoshoot. This is a fun tradition that a lot of mom’s enjoy and can result in some pretty adorable portraits. For her second birthday, we wanted to do something a little bit more unique and we decided to try out a paint smash!

My setup was simple, using white seamless paper as the backdrop. This made clean-up very easy and also kept the focus of the images on her artwork. I also dressed her in a white onesie, which at the end became a keep-sake to hang along side her painting.

It didn’t take much encouragement to get her to go to work on her masterpiece. We used non-toxic, washable paints. She was old enough not to put her hands in her mouth, but if you do this session with a one year old, you may wish to make your own edible paints. There are many recipes online for this.

After using the paint brushes for a while, we encouraged her to also finger paint so she could add some more character to her art, as well as get a little messy!

When it was all finished, she had had a blast – and clean-up was a breeze! We chose to end her session with a bubble splash at the end where we set up a little tub with bubbles and got a few more cute portraits.

This ended up being a really fun alternative to a cake smash portrait session, and it resulted in a fun keepsake as well.
